The Art of Devotion: Stained Glass by Marc Chagall
Abstract: The work of Marc Chagall, arguably the greatest painter of the 20th century to so strongly identify with Judaism, exemplifies a unique synthesis of Jewish, Russian and Christian elements within the formal structure and color of French painting. This combination is best seen through his work in stained glass, a natural medium for not only his colorist style of artistic expression, but also for his life-long love of the Bible. Focusing on three examples of Chagall's stained glass my thesis will show how - through his very unique experience of the world - Chagall could create seemingly pantheistic, Judeo-Christian stained glass messages that fuse together his childhood experiences in Vitebsk, Russia with a deeply spiritual non-sectarian understanding of the Bible.
